Day 1

Building a Rough Cut

How do I organize my footage? How do assemble my shots into a sequence? How can I re-arrange and remove footage in the timeline? How do I add music and narration? How can I make very fine refinements to my edit?

Day 2

Customizing, Capturing & Transitions

I shot a video with two or more cameras, what are some techniques for editing that? How can I customize Final Cut Pro to best suit my editing style? How do I get footage into Final Cut Pro? How can I add dissolves, white flashes or star-wipes? What's Rendering?

Day 3

Sound & Picture

How can I ensure the background music stays in the background? How do I add titles, like at the end of a movie when they scroll, or at the bottom of the screen to identify people I've interviewed? My camera was set wrong and my footage has a blue tint, how can I fix it? How can simulate camera movement? How do I slow down my footage? How do prepare my final sequence for publishing online, for creating a DVD or for sending to a TV station?

Is This Course For Me?

This class is designed for anyone looking to edit professional-quality video with Final Cut Pro X and who prefers hands-on and interactive instruction to best explore its functionality.

Are There Prerequisites?

Students should have the following prerequisite knowledge prior to attending the course: - Knowledge of OS X and basic computer navigation - Basic knowledge of editing terminology is highly recommended

Is there an exam?

There is an exam, the successful completion of grants you Final Cut Pro Certified User, Level 1 certification. The exam is optional and costs $100 with the course, or $150 without the course or for re-writes. You can buy the exam with the course and then you have one year to come in and write it at Splice.

I've never edited before and I want the certification. Can I write the exam after the course?

You could write the exam after the course. If you've never edited before, you should probably take this course and then go study and practice, practice, practice.

What book do I need?

The book for this course is Apple Pro Training Series, "Final Cut Pro X" by Diana Weynand. Save 30% by using coupon code PP-APL-DISC.

Do I need to bring anything else?

Headphones are required for this course and we ask that you bring your own.

Instructor Bio

Woody has been successful as a professional video editor, working as a production editor in the Arts & Entertainment division of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He has spent years performing online and offline editing for broadcast television. He was also a visual effects compositor on Season 4 of Lexx. While living in England, Woody was a post-production consultant on Batman Begins, and a technical consultant on Harry Potter's 2 and 3. He was a trainer in broadcast news workflow at Al Aan TV in Dubai, TV3 and RTE in Dublin, BBC London, Aberdeen and Glasgow, and spent a year working for TV2/Kobenhavn, Denmark's 24-hour news channel.
