APRIL 3/2010. Halifax NS based Splice Training Inc. announced today that it is opening a Splice training centre in downtown Toronto. The expansion represents a considerable growth opportunity for the East Coast based firm, which is also introducing additional high-end courses that will run out of the larger central Canadian facility.
Since 2006, Splice has serviced a growing market of enterprise customers who deploy Apple’s server technologies. As Apple’s market share has increased, so has the demand for Splice’s courses. Responding to the breakaway success of the iPhone, in 2009, Splice introduced a set of iPhone OS development courses that have recently been updated with new content for Apple’s new iPad.
Splice is also known for excellence in delivering broadcast-level training in video editing for TV and film, and has recently announced a partnership with Tewksbury MA based Avid Technology. This partnership allows Splice to bring the Avid certification curriculum to all of Splice’s training facilities.
“We have a very specific model for how Splice locations work,” says principal trainer Woody Lidstone. “At the end of the training day, we want to be excellent hosts both in the classroom and out of it. Students should be able to walk out of Splice and into a thriving trendy area of the downtown city-centre. We place our locations on well known streets, no more than a block away from hotels, live theatre, pubs and public transit. Then we offer our students a concierge service to help them make the most of their trip, from locating a kid-friendly museum to booking sports or theatre tickets.”
The new centre is on the top floor on the corner of Yonge and College Streets. Situated above the College Street subway station, the location is readily accessible through Toronto’s subway system, the TTC, as well as from either of Toronto’s two airports.
The courses offered by Splice represent a growing yet still niche market. When courses begin next month, it will be the only Apple and Avid authorized training centre in downtown Toronto.
Splice revolutionized the training experience by tossing out chairs to make more space for students, offering complimentary bar and cafe service, situating their training centres in the heart of the urban environment, allowing students to re-take the same course at no extra charge for a year, by introducing flat-rate pricing and by creating a “Guaranteed to Run” program. The “Guaranteed to Run” program tackles the negative trend in the Training Industry of cancelling courses unless a minimum number of students have registered.
